背景

中華人民共和國建立后，鐵道部根據鐵路運行里程、路網密度、樞紐設置等因素，著手調整了機車車輛工業的布局。

在合并、調整、改造原有機車車輛廠的同時，在各地等地新建了一批工廠。

而同時為配合中國第一個五年計劃時期（1953年—1957年）機械工業的建設部署，以發展冶金設備、發電設備、運輸機械、金屬切削機床的重工業制造為重點，建設一批大型現代化骨干企業。

中國 *** 根據這一部署建設了投資1000萬元人民幣以上的重大項目70多個，其中為了填補鐵路機車專業制造廠的空白，開始籌建大同機車廠，為“一五”期間156個重點項目之一，同時期建立起的機車車輛行業另有長春客車廠、長春機車廠和株洲貨車廠。

1954年，經中央人民 *** 批準，第一機械工業部成立了“大同機車制造廠籌備處”。

經過考察和論證，于1954年9月3日決定在山西大同籌建一座大型蒸汽機車制造工廠。

1955年10月10日，第一機械工業部機車車輛管理局將大同機車制造廠籌備處易名為“四二八廠”。

隨后又在1957年3月27日批準取消“四二八廠”代號，正式更名為大同機車廠。

蒸汽機車生產

大同機車廠生產的第一臺機車——和平型3501號

前進101機車的生產銘牌，現存中國鐵道博物館1957年8月15日，大同機車廠廠區破土動工，當時生產區用地總面積為105萬平方米，廠房建筑面積為27萬平方米，設備總臺數近2800臺，設計生產規模為每年制造建設型蒸汽機車400臺。

由于受到1958年開始的“大躍進”影響，鐵路機車需求量急劇上升，大同機車廠在廠房尚未完全竣工的情況下，就開始了機車試制工作。

1959年，大同機車廠按照大連機車車輛廠提供的圖紙，開始試制和平型干線貨運蒸汽機車。

1959年12月26日，大同機車工廠制造的首臺機車——和平型3501號試制成功出廠[3]。

至1964年，大同機車廠按照中國鐵路實際需要對和平型機車的牽引熱工性能方面作徹底改進，重新設計了機車鍋爐，增設擋煙板。

1964年9月28日，首臺經過重大改進設計的新和平型蒸汽機車（車號HP101，后改為前進101）在大同試制成功，定名為前進型機車。

1965年4月，大同機車廠被鐵道部指定為前進型蒸汽機車的唯一廠家，并開始批量生產。

自此前進型機車作為中國國內功率最大、效率最高的蒸汽機車，成為當時中國鐵路干線貨運的主型蒸汽機車。

由于前進型機車與大同機車廠的緊密關系，大同機車廠所在的地點也被命名為“前進路”，廠歌稱為“前進曲”，廠方的報紙為 《前進報》。

至1979年8月20日，大同機車廠制造前進型蒸汽機車的累計產量達到3000臺，受到鐵道部的通令嘉獎。

1980年，大同機車廠更進一步刷新了生產紀錄，創造年產325臺蒸汽機車的新水平。

1984年3月，大同機車工廠突然接到鐵道部“突擊生產30臺前進型機車，確保皖贛新線通車”的緊急命令。

由于鐵道部要求皖贛鐵路必須在同年6月1日全線通車運營，為此要求大同機車工廠要在5月15日以前，完成30臺前進型機車的制造任務，交付皖贛線運用。

前進型機車從投料到組裝成機車，必要的生產周期是52天，按每天造一臺計算，共需82天，再加上生產工藝調整和建設型機車的轉產收尾，需要更多的時間。

但是大同機車廠掀起了“上前進、保皖贛”競賽熱潮。

75天后，30臺嶄新的前進型機車按時開赴皖贛新線投入了運營。

1985年，根據建設型蒸汽機車需求量上升和存在的問題，大同機車廠著手對其設計作進一步的改進，于1986年研制了首臺“建設B型”蒸汽機車（JS-8001）。

大同機車廠作為世界上最后大批量制造干線蒸汽機車的廠家之一，在1970年代至1980年代曾經吸引了各國數以萬計的蒸汽機車愛好者慕名而來。

為了滿足國內外蒸汽機車愛好者的要求，大同機車工廠和鐵道部、山西省等有關部門聯合主辦的“中國首屆大同國際蒸汽機車節”和“中國歷代蒸汽機車巡回展”于1988年9月15日至17日在山西省大同市舉行。

截至1988年10月20日，大同機車廠累計制造各型蒸汽機車5571臺，遍及全國21個鐵路局、116個機務段。

1988年末，大同機車廠按照鐵道部的指令，停止生產干線大型蒸汽機車，轉為制造內燃機車和電力機車。

1988年12月21日，大同機車廠生產的最后一臺干線蒸汽機車前進型7207號出廠，同日大同機車廠也舉行了隆重的轉產儀式。

內燃機車生產

大同機車廠首臺東風4B型內燃機車而在生產蒸汽機車的同時，大同機車廠也在其他方面發展。

早在1960年代中期，大同機車廠就開始嘗試研制內燃機車，并于1965年12月15日試制成功第一臺內燃機車——編號為ND-0032的東風型內燃機車。

1969年12月，大同機車廠試制成功中國第一臺“長征型”3000馬力燃氣渦輪機車[5]。

大同機車廠在1986年正式開始批量生產內燃機車，于1986年9月22日，大同工廠制造的第一臺東風4B型內燃機車（DF4B-6001）竣工剪彩。

1997年9月26日，大同機車廠開始生產東風4C型內燃機車。

隨著同車轉產電力機車，大同機車廠的東風4B型和東風4C型兩種內燃機車先后于1998年和1999年停產。

至轉產電力機車為止，大同機車工廠制造各型內燃機車共計659臺。

電力機車生產

1985年，大同機車廠意識到電力機車是中國鐵路機車車輛產業未來的重要發展方向，提出了“南株（株洲電力機車廠）北同（大同機車廠）”的電力機車生產布局構想。

1989年10月，鐵道部正式批復大同機車廠轉產電力機車的計劃。

1990年9月15日，大同機車廠按照株洲廠的圖紙試制的第一臺韶山3型電力機車竣工[3]。

1992年，由大同機車廠研發的首臺韶山7型電力機車通過驗收。

隨后又先后開發了25噸軸重韶山7B型重載貨運電力機車和韶山7C、韶山7D型提速客運電力機車，使韶山7型電力機車形成系列化。

韶山7C、韶山7D和韶山7E機車，先后成為中國鐵路第三、四、五次大提速的主型機車。

1999年6月，大同機車廠停產內燃機車，成為單一制造電力機車的專業工廠。

2001年至2002年，大同電力機車廠參與了時速270公里“中華之星”電力動車組的研制項目，與株洲電力機車廠合作研制了交流傳動動力車。

截至2003年年底，同車共生產各型電力機車1,146臺。

2004年，大同電力機車負責了中國北車集團公司重點科研項目——交流傳動客運電力機車“天梭”號的研制。

體制改革

大同機車廠在歷史上先后分別隸屬第一機械工業部機車車輛工業管理局、鐵道部機車車輛工業總局、中國鐵路機車車輛工業總公司。

2000年，隨著國企主輔分離、輔業改制的浪潮，中國鐵路機車車輛工業總公司重組為中國北方機車車輛工業集團公司和中國南方機車車輛工業集團公司，大同電力機車廠作為重要組成部分劃歸為中國北車集團，名為中國北車集團大同機車廠。

2003年，中國北車集團對大同機車廠進行重組，組建“大同電力機車有限責任公司”。

對外合作

1996年，大同機車工廠與美國ABC鐵路產品中國投資公司共同投資組建了大同愛碧璽鑄造有限公司（Datong ABC Casting Co., Ltd.），其中同車占出資額的60%，美方占40%，設計規模為年產16萬個整體鑄鋼車輪，于1998年籌建完成投入生產[6]。

2002年，引進德國斯特曼公司DSA系列受電弓技術組建了北京賽德高科鐵道電氣科技有限責任公司。

2005年與ABB（中國）有限公司合資組建了大同ABB牽引變壓器有限責任公司。

自2003年以來，按照中國國務院提出的“引進先進技術，聯合設計生產，打造中國品牌”戰略，在鐵道部的統一安排下，大同電力機車作為鐵道部機車車輛裝備現代化的重點扶持企業之一，與法國阿爾斯通公司合作。

2005年2月，大同電力機車與阿爾斯通簽訂了大功率交流傳動電力機車采購和技術引進轉讓項目合同，合作生產HXD2型電力機車[7][8]。

同車公司針對阿爾斯通公司轉讓的制造技術，從2004年開始先后投入8億元人民幣資金，實施技術改造和工藝流程再造，從等離子數控切割的數字化備料、焊接機械手的優質焊接到數控加工中心的精確加工、三坐標測量機的精密檢測、機車調試的先進試驗，建成了具有國際先進水平的7條專業化生產線[9]。
